Isolation
An excellent entry: Stories from the N Train. I actually felt guilty as I read it because my reaction would probably be similiar. It's obvious we live in a fairly isolated society but is this the kind of society we want to live in? It takes a village to raise a child but what happens when the village stops caring?

It is obvious in this case that the Village, though not giving money, does care as evidenced by the blog author writing the post and you picking it up.
The case is complex. The "punk" has enough money for the subway and maybe will learn to navigate the system to receive transportation for the disabled.
What I see most apparently lacking is a willingness to teach the punk to fish. However, with a chance subway encounter, it is not possible to know whether there are people in his life teaching him to fish. He may just be throwing himself a pity party.
Also, the Village is trying to teach him. The successful beggar appears and approaches her story with a beautiful aria instead of a hard luck tale. Maybe he will have seen something of this before he leaves the train.
